Where We Have Been - Singapore
Singapore was really only on our list because of its history with David’s family. His parents met there—his father was based in Singapore with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and his mother was there with her family. They’d been posted to Singapore immediately after the war, when her father—seconded to the Royal Navy—was involved in helping rebuild the port.
The family returned again when David’s mother was in her twenties, and it was then that she met (and married) David’s dad. Needless to say, a Royal Navy officer’s daughter falling for an enlisted Air Force bloke from the colonies didn’t initially go down particularly well.
We visited a few places tied to David’s family history, including the iconic Raffles Hotel. We also took the opportunity to get up close and personal with a wide variety of birds at Jurong Bird Park.

While we were there, we treated ourselves to something truly special: a private behind-the-scenes tour where we got to watch—and even handle—some of the raptors, including a Secretary Bird, a Brahminy Kite (often called the red-backed sea eagle), an Eurasian Griffon Vulture and a Buffy Fish Owl.

We also loved the wildlife at Singapore Zoo and took the Night Safari, where we got up close—and in some cases, very close—to a variety of animals, including a Serval Cat, an Albino Burmese Python, and a Spotted Wood Owl.

We’ve been lucky over the years to travel more than many—though nowhere near as much as we still aspire to. The world is a big place, and there are so many destinations left to discover: places we haven’t seen yet, places we want to explore more thoroughly, and old favourites we can’t wait to reconnect with.
Elsewhere on Crows on the Go, you’ll find:
• more about our travels and the places we’ve been
• our thoughts (and, in some cases, tips) on those destinations
• the places that have become “special” to us
• and more!
